Health classes explained

Preferred Plus, Preferred, Standard Plus and Standard—rate classes defined and what they reflect.

Rate classes are how carriers price term policies—they sort applicants by health and risk. Naming conventions shift slightly between carriers but the ladder remains consistent: Preferred Plus (sometimes Super Preferred or Preferred Best), followed by Preferred, Standard Plus, and Standard, with table-rated options beyond that. Tobacco users get sorted into their own parallel class system.

What underwriters look at

Health evaluations examine build (height and weight), blood pressure and cholesterol readings, family medical background, and driving records.

How to use the quote tool

You'll answer a health question—choose the option that honestly describes where you stand. Excellent gives you Preferred Plus rates, Very good gives Preferred rates, Good gives Standard Plus and Average gives Standard rates. These quotes reflect that classification; actual rates get finalized when you apply and the carrier underwriters review your full picture. Unsure between two? Quote both and compare before deciding.
