How much life insurance do you need?
This includes a calculator plus an explanation of its components: income years, debts, education allowance, and what you currently have in place.
Sum your expected income contribution, then subtract what's already available. Precision isn't essential: policies are sold in standard increments, and the goal is a practical amount protecting your family through the years that count.
Coverage estimate
Coverage target = (yearly income × income years) + debts + education − existing coverage, rounded to $5,000 nearest. A rough estimate, not professional guidance.
Why those inputs
Income years. Standard guidance recommends ten to twenty years of replacement income; your household's need depends on how long dependents would need protection. Pomona families with minor children frequently choose longer durations as education, child care and housing expenses tend to cluster.
Debts. Mortgages dominate most household debt. Coverage eliminating the mortgage provides family members control over their situation without financial necessity dictating their next steps.
Education. Budget for each child using today's educational cost estimates. Factoring this in initially beats seeking additional coverage years later.
What you have. Employer group coverage and available funds count. Remember that employer-sponsored coverage typically terminates when employment does, so many people forecast keeping less of it.
Once determined, your target amount can be quoted for 10–30-year terms with the quote tool across all available carriers. Many choose modestly above their calculation because younger applicants see relatively low cost increases.
